The Core Idea

Martín vuelve plays heavily with perception and memory. What inspired the core idea behind Martín’s mysterious return?

We feel that as we grow older, the way our memory works changes. As children, the past and the present are one and the same; as adults, memories become a sort of film that we construct ourselves, with heroes and villains, often lying to ourselves to give them a meaning they do not have. One interpretation of the character of Martín (among other possible ones) is to see him as an avenging angel, ready to punish those who forget their friends.

Character & Psychology

Pía’s psychological state drives the entire film how did you approach building her character to feel both grounded and unreliable?

Pía’s madness is literary and fictional. Being mad is a very sad and lonely experience; it is not something that allows us to battle monsters from outer space, nor to unravel sinister conspiracies. We deliberately wanted the protagonist’s mental state to bear no resemblance whatsoever to a real medical condition.

Tension & Direction

The tension in the film comes from subtle details rather than overt moments. How did you direct those quiet but unsettling beats?

We drew up a very detailed technical script and tried to bring out every aspect of a location that was already quite unique in its own right. We observed and considered each shot very carefully. We were very conscious of, and focused on, the fact that those quiet yet foreboding moments were at the heart of the film.

Performance Approach

The performances were a major highlight. What was your process working with actors to maintain that level of emotional realism?

The actors who appeared in the film are highly skilled professionals, and all it took was for them to understand their characters in depth to achieve the realism required. In any case, we sought to create contradictory characters in order to give them depth and realism; Pía comes across as paranoid, yet reasonable. Martín is dangerous, yet a bit of a fool. Santi is loyal, yet capricious. The fact that the actors were aware of the dimensions of their characters helped them to portray them effectively.

Visual Direction

Some feedback mentioned the opportunity to push the visual style even further. How did you decide on the film’s visual approach, and what would you expand on in the future?

We would have loved to have taken the visuals to the extreme, but the budget we had was roughly the price of a second-hand Chinese car. The story is a twisted fantasy, and the visual style should have been entirely in keeping with that premise (if we’d had the money).

The film balances ambiguity and clarity. How did you determine how much to reveal versus what to leave open to interpretation?

Only a few specific facts, revealed at the end, show what is really happening in that house; although we also like to play with an open ending, one that allows for different interpretations of who or what Martín really is.

Sound & Atmosphere

Sound and atmosphere play a key role in building tension. How did you approach the sound design of the film?

We draw primarily on the concept of the ‘ominous’ the uncanny that intrudes upon everyday life, causing a rupture in logic and sanity. Furthermore, we sought to ensure that the sound design reflected the complex mental universe of the antagonists (Pía and Martín). Often, the ambient sound mirrors the characters’ dialogue; jungle sounds, silly music, confusing electronic sounds

Genre & Identity

The concept feels familiar yet fresh. How did you take a psychological thriller framework and make it your own?

We really appreciate the comment, but we feel that the term ‘psychological thriller’ is a bit of a stretch. We see our film as a black comedy, a bit twisted, and nothing more.

Reflection & Growth

Looking back, is there anything you would explore more deeply whether in character, story, or world-building if you revisited this project?

The character development and their interactions should undoubtedly be more thoughtful and polished; this sometimes means the story progresses a bit stiltedly. Technically and stylistically, the film needs a great deal more work.

Winning the Best Feature Award recognizes your film’s impact and execution. How does this recognition influence your creative path moving forward?

It makes us feel so happy and grateful!! For us, receiving recognition from a film tradition as significant as the American one fills us with joy and, we must admit, a touch of curiosity.
