The Story & Inspiration

Congratulations on Mecánica del Tiempo receiving the Best Documentary Award. When you first met Arturo, what made you feel there was a film hidden inside his story?

I have the fortune of being Arturo Palacios’ son, so I have always felt a deep admiration for him and his journey. Furthermore, I often noticed how clients in his workshop would repeatedly tell him that "no one else could fix" certain things. At that moment, I realized his story was incredibly powerful because of the recognition and respect he commands within the automotive world.

Emotional Core

There’s something powerful about watching someone continue doing what they love despite the cost. When did you realize that was the emotional core of this documentary?

I realized how powerful this was because Arturo is 76 years old and continues to work. Although he shouldn't have to at his age, he keeps going because he truly loves cars repairing them and making them look beautiful. This deeply caught my attention; he is someone who loves his craft despite the weight of the years. He feels he should stop, but he doesn't yet know what life will look like when he finally does.

Setting & Atmosphere

Arturo’s workshop almost feels like its own character in the film. How did that space influence the tone and atmosphere of the story you were telling?

The workshop space was one of the most vital elements of the story because it is his own. The way it is organized and the objects within it spoke volumes about Arturo’s tastes and personality, even things he hadn't realized himself until we filmed the documentary.

Discovery & Process

Documentary filmmaking often requires patience and instinct. Were there moments while filming when you realized the story was becoming something deeper than you originally imagined?

Yes. I think the moment I realized this was while we were talking in the car. It touched every fiber of my being to hear his voice break as he spoke about the importance of his family and his dream of seeing all his children become professionals. This moved me deeply because I have seen his daily effort to support us; it is profound and truly inspiring.

Personal Reflection

The film highlights a quiet kind of resilience, someone working, creating, and pushing forward even when life becomes uncertain. What did spending time with Arturo teach you personally?

I learned many things. I learned that when you are about to fall into a deeper hole than the one you were already in, the most important thing is to persevere and keep moving forward. I learned about responsibility, the value of waking up early, and being an example for your children. I learned that you sometimes have to sacrifice things to provide the best for your family. Finally, I learned that while a father's love might manifest differently for a son than for a daughter, they love you immensely and would do anything to see you happy.

Many viewers connect with the idea that passion can sometimes ask more of us than we expect. Was that theme something you were consciously exploring, or did it reveal itself naturally through Arturo’s journey?

Yes, it was a theme I explored from the beginning. I feel it is a crucial element that resonates with people who are dedicated and passionate about what they do.

Trust & Intimacy

One of the strengths of the film is how intimate it feels. How did you build the trust needed for Arturo to share such a personal chapter of his life on camera?

I thought this was going to be much more complex. On one hand, he is my father, so in theory, it should have been simple; however, we don't usually talk about these topics. I was worried he might close himself off, but it was quite the opposite, thanks to the preparation we did during the months of pre-production and development.

Moments That Matter

As filmmakers, we’re often drawn to people whose lives carry deeper meaning beneath everyday routines. What moments during production reminded you that this story was worth telling?

Throughout the shoot, many crew members felt very identified with the story, even seeing their own fathers in Arturo. This was very important; it kept everyone deeply involved and reinforced the feeling that this project was worthwhile and that Arturo's story deserved to be told.

Defining Scene

Looking back now, is there a particular scene in Mecánica del Tiempo that you feel captures the true spirit of the film?

I believe the final scene, when Arturo gives his final message in a voiceover while we see him closing the workshop and finishing his workday. That scene isn't just the essence of the project; it is the very essence of Arturo as a person.

Looking Ahead

Winning Best Documentary is a meaningful milestone. How does this recognition shape the way you think about the stories you want to tell next?

Winning this award is a massive motivation for me as a Director and for my team. It proves that our effort and visions are valid in this industry. It motivates us to keep developing and creating stories and to achieve the recognition we've worked so hard for. I am very grateful to your beautiful festival for everything and for how we have been treated. I am happy and motivated to keep taking this beautiful documentary to new festivals around the world.
